Ignorance is dangerous

Ignorance is alive and well tonight folks! Let me tell you, it never sleeps. I understand that some may not understand what it is like to have a child that is transgender or for someone who may know someone who is transgender. I understand that is a “low number” of the population but they are out there. 0.6% to be exact. Do you know how many that is? Let’s check it out.

1.4 million

Approximately 0.6% of adults in the United States, or 1.4 million individuals, identify as transgender

1.4 MILLION That is a lot of people! That is the amount of people who lived in San Diego, California in 2014. (Infoplease.com) One of them could be your child, your niece or nephew, your sibling, your mom or dad, you aunt or uncle, your best friend or even your UPS driver.

In todays society almost everyone has access to the internet in the United States. It can be from a mobile device, tablet, laptop, desktop, library or even a coffee shop computer. The ability to pull out one of these devices and do actual research from reputable internet site is literally at the hands of so many, yet no one seems to do any detailed research. They also do not seem to know how to ask questions in a caring, no condescending manner or just an outright ridiculous statement.

You know when I was younger my mother would always say “If you do not have anything nice to say, then don’t say nothing at all.” I get asking questions. I get that it may not be a topic that you know much about BUT when you hear someone talking about a loved one who is transgender, you probably should not ask stupid, ignorant and insulting questions or statements.

It literally cost nothing to just KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT! To be honest, I don’t mind the questions. That is the main reason I even started this blog was so I could answer questions and so people could get a first hand look at what it is like to know someone who is transgender. I started this blog to try and bring awareness. Knowledge is power. I just wish that some would just TRY to use this power.

Sitting back and listening to others has also helped expand my knowledge. I am not saying that I am the most educated person because, let’s face it, we all know I am not. One thing I am though, is someone who tries to learn as much as possible and to expand and understand things that I do not. I am someone who tries to be compassionate and caring to things I know nothing about. I just ask that people use their brain before speaking or learn how to actually ask useful questions.

Like I have said many times before, it cost $0 to be kind. Love everyone no matter if they are different from you. No matter your differences, we are all apart of the human race. Help each other, learn from one another and always BE KIND!

Until next time folks.
